  • exponential-time — (complexity)   The set or property of problems which can be solved by an exponential-time algorithm but for which no polynomial-time algorithm is known.
  • exponential-time algorithm — (complexity)   An algorithm (or Turing Machine) that is guaranteed to terminate within a number of steps which is a exponential function of the size of the problem. For example, if you have to check every number of n digits to find a solution, the complexity is O(10^n), and if you add an extra digit, you must check ten times as many numbers. Even if such an algorithm is practical for some given value of n, it is likely to become impractical for larger values. This is in contrast to a polynomial-time algorithm which grows more slowly. See also computational complexity, polynomial-time, NP-complete.
  • exponential — Of or expressed by a mathematical exponent.
  • exponentially — (mathematics, sciences) In an exponential manner.
  • exponential distribution — a continuous single-parameter distribution used esp when making statements about the length of life of certain materials or waiting times between randomly occurring events. Its density function is p(x) = λe–λx for positive λ and nonnegative x, and it is a special case of the gamma distribution
  • exponential horn — a horn for the radiation of acoustic or high-frequency electromagnetic waves, of which the cross-sectional area increases exponentially with the length
  • exponentiate — (mathematics) To utilize exponentiation.
  • exponentiated — Simple past tense and past participle of exponentiate.
  • exponentiation — The operation of raising one quantity to the power of another.
  • exponent — One who expounds, represents or advocates.
