One-syllable rhymes

  • aides — nurse's aide.
  • braids — to weave together strips or strands of; plait: to braid the hair.

  • spades — a black figure shaped like an inverted heart and with a short stem at the cusp opposite the point, used on playing cards.

  • charades — a parlour game in which one team acts out each syllable of a word, the other team having to guess the word
  • crusades — (often initial capital letter) any of the military expeditions undertaken by the Christians of Europe in the 11th, 12th, and 13th centuries for the recovery of the Holy Land from the Muslims.
  • hades — Geology. the angle between a fault plane and the vertical, measured perpendicular to the strike of the fault; complement of the dip.
  • red maids — a fleshy plant, Calandrinia ciliata menziesi, of the purslane family, native to the western U.S., having rose-colored or crimson flowers.

Three-syllable rhymes

  • ace of spades — playing card, sometimes considered omen of death
  • palisades — a fence of pales or stakes set firmly in the ground, as for enclosure or defense.
