9-letter words that end in file

  • card file — a collection of cards containing data or records, arranged systematically, as in alphabetical order, in boxes or drawers
  • case file — a file kept on a person who is involved in a medical, legal, or social work investigation
  • data file — a file containing data that is used by a computer program
  • flat file — (operating system, storage)   A single file containing flat ASCII representing or encoding some structure, e.g. a database, tree or network. Flat files can be processed with general purpose tools such as Perl and text editors but are less efficient than binary files if they must be parsed repeatedly by a program. Flat files are more portable between different operating systems and application programs than binary files, and are more easily transmitted in electronic mail. See also flatten, sharchive.
  • flat-file — noting or pertaining to a database system in which each database consists of a single file not linked to any other file.
  • fool file — (jargon)   A term found on Usenet for a notional repository of all the most dramatically and abysmally stupid utterances ever. An entire subgenre of sig blocks consists of the header "From the fool file:" followed by some quote the poster wishes to represent as an immortal gem of dimwittery; for this usage to be really effective, the quote has to be so obviously wrong as to be laughable. More than one Usenetter has achieved an unwanted notoriety by being quoted in this way.
  • interfile — to combine two or more similarly arranged sets of items, as cards or documents, into a single file.
  • kill file — [Usenet] Per-user file(s) used by some Usenet reading programs (originally Larry Wall's rn) to discard summarily (without presenting for reading) articles matching some particularly uninteresting (or unwanted) patterns of subject, author, or other header lines. Thus to add a person (or subject) to one's kill file is to arrange for that person to be ignored by one's newsreader in future. By extension, it may be used for a decision to ignore the person or subject in other media. See also plonk.
  • nail file — a small file of metal or cardboard, for trimming, smoothing, or shaping the fingernails and sometimes having a point for removing dirt from under them.
  • plan file — (operating system)   On Unix systems that support finger, the ".plan" file in a user's home directory is displayed when the user is fingered. This feature was originally intended to be used to keep potential fingerers apprised of one's location and near-future plans, but has been turned almost universally to humorous and self-expressive purposes (like a sig block). See also Hacking X for Y. A later innovation in plan files was the introduction of "scrolling plan files" which are one-dimensional animations made using only the printable ASCII character set, carriage return and line feed, avoiding terminal specific escape sequences, since the finger command will (for security reasons; see letterbomb) not pass the escape character. Scrolling .plan files have become art forms in miniature, and some sites have started competitions to find who can create the longest running, funniest, and most original animations. A compiler (ASP) is available on Usenet for producing them. Typical animation components include: See also twirling baton.
  • serrefile — an officer placed in the rearmost file of soldiers in a troop
  • text file — a file, readable by a person, that doesn't contain any codes but only contains text and numbers
  • work file — a temporary file that holds data during processing
