A former mainframe systems programmer, Buerg wrote DOS utilities when he began using an IBM PC and missed the file-scanning ability he had on mainframes. The software became an instant success, and his list utility was in use on an estimated 5 million PCs.

The PDP-11 and VAX families of computers and Intel microprocessors and a lot of communications and networking hardware are little-endian.
