- deadlock — If a dispute or series of negotiations reaches deadlock, neither side is willing to give in at all and no agreement can be made.
- blank wall — an impassable barricade or obstacle; a situation in which further progress is impossible: Attempts to get information by questioning the neighbors ran into a blank wall.
- nonfeasance — the omission of some act that ought to have been performed. Compare malfeasance, misfeasance (def 2).
- impasse — a position or situation from which there is no escape; deadlock.
- logjam — an immovable pileup or tangle of logs, as in a river, causing a blockage.
- failure — an act or instance of failing or proving unsuccessful; lack of success: His effort ended in failure. The campaign was a failure.
- draw — to cause to move in a particular direction by or as if by a pulling force; pull; drag (often followed by along, away, in, out, or off).
