- lay open — to put or place in a horizontal position or position of rest; set down: to lay a book on a desk.
- mow down — to cut down (grass, grain, etc.) with a scythe or a machine.
- triturate — to reduce to fine particles or powder by rubbing, grinding, bruising, or the like; pulverize.
- beat a dead horse — to argue an issue that is already settled
- chew over — If you chew something over, you keep thinking about it.
- get down to brass tacks — discuss essentials
- kick around — to strike with the foot or feet: to kick the ball; to kick someone in the shins.
- sort out — a particular kind, species, variety, class, or group, distinguished by a common character or nature: to develop a new sort of painting; nice people, of course, but not really our sort.
- think through — to have a conscious mind, to some extent of reasoning, remembering experiences, making rational decisions, etc.
