command post — A command post is a place from which a commander in the army controls and organizes his forces.
focal point — Also called principal focus. Optics. either of two points on the axis of a mirror, lens, or other optical system, one point being such that rays diverging from it are deviated parallel to the axis upon refraction or reflection by the system and the other point being such that rays parallel to the axis of the system converge to the point upon refraction or reflection by the system.
headquarters — a center of operations, as of the police or a business, from which orders are issued; the chief administrative office of an organization: The operatives were always in touch with headquarters.
hotbed — a bottomless, boxlike, usually glass-covered structure and the bed of earth it covers, heated typically by fermenting manure or electrical cables, for growing plants out of season.
control center — an administrative or operational center for a group of related activities: the control center for the new military offensive.
core — The core of a fruit is the central part of it. It contains seeds or pips.
focus — a central point, as of attraction, attention, or activity: The need to prevent a nuclear war became the focus of all diplomatic efforts.
ganglion — Anatomy. a mass of nerve tissue existing outside the central nervous system. any of certain masses of gray matter in the brain, as the basal ganglia.
heart — Anatomy. a hollow, pumplike organ of blood circulation, composed mainly of rhythmically contractile smooth muscle, located in the chest between the lungs and slightly to the left and consisting of four chambers: a right atrium that receives blood returning from the body via the superior and inferior vena cavae, a right ventricle that pumps the blood through the pulmonary artery to the lungs for oxygenation, a left atrium that receives the oxygenated blood via the pulmonary veins and passes it through the mitral valve, and a left ventricle that pumps the oxygenated blood, via the aorta, throughout the body.
hub — the central part of a wheel, as that part into which the spokes are inserted.
switchboard — a structural unit on which are mounted switches and instruments necessary to complete telephone circuits manually.
