noun direct free kick

  • onside kick — a kickoff deliberately kicked a short distance in an attempt by the kicking team to regain possession of the ball by recovering it after it has traveled forward the legally required distance of 10 yards, beyond the 50-yard line.
  • indirect free kick — a free kick from which a goal cannot be scored until after the ball has been touched by at least one player other than the kicker.
  • penalty kick — a free kick awarded for an infraction committed by a defensive player in the penalty area and taken by the offensive player who has been fouled from a point 12 yards (11 meters) directly in front of the goal.
  • squib kick — a kickoff that is purposely low so it will wobble and bounce along the ground, making it hard to field and return.
