noun deadlock

  • predicament — an unpleasantly difficult, perplexing, or dangerous situation.
  • standstill — a state of cessation of movement or action; halt; stop: The ball rolled to a standstill.
  • gridlock — the stoppage of free vehicular movement in an urban area because key intersections are blocked by traffic.
  • dilemma — a situation requiring a choice between equally undesirable alternatives.
  • plight — Archaic. pledge.
  • standoff — a standing off or apart; aloofness.
  • box — A box is a square or rectangular container with hard or stiff sides. Boxes often have lids.
  • draw — to cause to move in a particular direction by or as if by a pulling force; pull; drag (often followed by along, away, in, out, or off).
  • pause — a temporary stop or rest, especially in speech or action: a short pause after each stroke of the oar.

  • catch-22 — If you describe a situation as a Catch-22, you mean it is an impossible situation because you cannot do one thing until you do another thing, but you cannot do the second thing until you do the first thing.
  • dead heat — If a race or contest is a dead heat, two or more competitors are joint winners, or are both winning at a particular moment in the race or contest. In American English, you can say that a race or contest is in a dead heat.
