gene
G g -
gene transfer
Biotechnology. the insertion of copies of a gene into living cells in order to induce synthesis of the gene's product: the desired gene may be microinjected directly into the cell or it may be inserted into the core of a virus by gene splicing and the virus allowed to infect the cell for replication of the gene in the cell's DNA. -
regulatory gene
any gene that exercises control over the expression of another gene or genes. -
artificial gene
a duplicate gene synthesized in the laboratory by combining nucleotides in a sequence characteristic of the copied gene. -
designer gene
a gene altered or created by genetic engineering, especially for use in gene therapy. -
northern blot
Biology, Medicine/Medical. a procedure for studying the activity of a specific gene, as in testing for a hereditary defect: RNA fragments in an extract of a cell population or a tissue are separated by gel electrophoresis, transferred to a filter, and then hybridized with labeled DNA or RNA derived from a laboratory-engineered copy of the gene in order to identify the size and abundance of the RNA expressed by that gene. -
recombinant dna technology
any of various techniques for separating and recombining segments of DNA or genes, often employing a restriction enzyme to cut a gene from a donor organism and inserting it into a plasmid or viral DNA for transplantation into a host organism, where the gene causes the production of a desired substance either for harvesting or for the benefit of the host organism itself.
